OpenAI Sets Sights on AGI by Year-End with Astra Model Family
OpenAI has ambitious plans to achieve Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) by December 31, 2026. CEO Sam Altman laid out the timeline in a recent interview, stating that the company is already 80% of the way there. This means they have only 20% left to go before achieving AGI, which OpenAI defines as 'highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.'
The company's research is centered around Astra, a forthcoming model family designed to coordinate up to 16 AI agents simultaneously. Astra has already made significant progress, solving 10 previously unsolved theoretical computer science problems and surpassing internal benchmarks for automating entry-level AI research work.
Despite this progress, OpenAI faces challenges in terms of safety concerns and corporate turbulence. The company has implemented safety pauses during the model's training due to cybersecurity capabilities, and it is navigating a turbulent 2026 marked by executive departures and ongoing lawsuits.
