OpenAI Solves 90-Year-Old Navier-Stokes Math Problem Using 10,000 AI Agents
OpenAI has made significant strides in solving one of mathematics' most enduring problems. The Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a Millennium Prize Problem, has been addressed by the company using a coordinated system of roughly 10,000 artificial intelligence agents.
The effort generated approximately 130 billion output tokens and 2.7 million messages during work on the Navier-Stokes problem alone. The agents were given access to tools including code execution and a cached version of the internet, allowing them to communicate with each other and explore different approaches to solving the problem.
According to OpenAI, their system reached a resolution on September 5, approximately 88 hours after the first agents were launched. This was followed by an additional 17 hours of formalization and checking using Lean, with GPT-6 Astra involved in this process.
