OpenAI Unveils $1 Billion Plan to Shield Organizations from AI Attacks

OpenAI has announced a $1 billion defense plan to combat AI attacks on organizations. The program will provide subsidized access to its cybersecurity model, Daybreak, for six months. This support includes discounted access, technical assistance, and training.

The priority users of the program include utilities, governments, regional banks, nonprofits, and open-source software maintainers. About 2,000 organizations already use Daybreak, according to OpenAI. The company has stated that its Astra model can detect unknown software flaws and turn them into working attacks with limited human guidance.

This ability has raised concerns over the potential for advanced AI tools to change cyber risk. Several companies, including Coinbase, Block, BitGo, Blockstream, and ARK Invest, have signed an open letter to AI labs requesting earlier access to powerful models for defensive security work. They argue that developers responsible for major crypto systems often receive weaker tools than attackers.

Eligible organizations can apply through the Daybreak website, and OpenAI plans to expand the program to partner countries in the coming weeks. The rollout will test whether defensive access can help organizations respond to threats faster.
