Opendoor Shares Plummet as Housing Market Downturn Delays Break-Even Milestone
Opendoor Technologies (OPEN) shares plummeted by approximately 7% on Thursday to $2.79, marking a new 52-week low and continuing the company's downward trajectory that has resulted in a 51% year-to-date loss.
The decline followed a social media post from CEO Kaz Nejatian, who announced that the company had not yet achieved adjusted net income (ANI) break-even status. The anticipated timeline for achieving ANI break-even has been delayed by six to eight weeks beyond prior expectations.
Nejatian attributed the delay to a severe housing market downturn in late August, which saw reduced home clearance rates and persistently high delisting activity. He stated that 'the last two weeks of August were among the worst we have seen for housing in years.'
Opendoor's third-quarter revenue projections show 10%-15% year-over-year growth, with contribution profit climbing 70%-75%. However, the company faces additional challenges from the interest rate environment, with rising Treasury yields intensifying its inventory-based business model.
