Optimism Buyback Program Faces Uncertain Future After 12 Months
Optimism's OP buyback program, which was launched to boost demand for its token, is facing an uncertain future. The Foundation told BeInCrypto that it will not commit to running the program beyond its first 12 months. This decision comes as monthly purchases have already fallen by a staggering 87%.
The program's main source of demand, the buyback has been purchasing OP tokens each month using up to half of Superchain revenue. In March, Optimism bought 6.95 million tokens, but in April, it only purchased 926,000. This represents a significant decline from the initial 1.57 million tokens purchased in January.
The Foundation's decision not to commit to the buyback program beyond its current term has raised concerns about the future of Optimism's token. The price of OP has been holding up relatively well, trading at $0.091 on Monday and up 3.1% on the day. However, the uncertainty surrounding the buyback program may impact investor confidence in the long run.
