Optimism Circulating Supply Set to Surge by 343 Million OP Tokens
The Optimism Foundation plans to increase its circulating supply by 343 million OP tokens by April 2027, reaching a total of 2.504 billion OP, which is 58.3% of the token's total supply. This forecast suggests a significant increase in circulation, but discrepancies exist between the project's budget update and its publicly available supply tracker.
The Foundation's Year 4 update and Year 5 outlook, published on August 6, listed 2.161 billion OP in circulation and a total supply of 4.295 billion. However, an increment from this circulation number to the forecasted end number would result in an increase of approximately 343 million OP.
The ecosystem fund has the highest allocation, accounting for 200 million OP, while early contributors have 47.6 million OP, investors have 15.3 million OP, and the governance fund has 10 million OP. The remaining amount of 70.1 million OP is unaccounted for in the listed categories compared to the August 6 number.
Optimism's buyback plan, approved by the governance in January, requires allocating 50% of revenue from eligible Superchains to monthly buybacks. As of August 6, over nine million OP had been purchased under this plan.
