Optimism's $49.7M Token Heist: Airdrop Reallocation Sparks Governance Concerns
On August 19th, the Optimism governance platform Agora was in its final minutes of voting. The proposal on the table involved reallocating 546.9 million OP tokens from the 'User Airdrop' allocation to the 'Strategic Ecosystem Fund', a move that would account for approximately 12.7% of the total supply and nearly 24% of the circulating supply.
The voting results seemed certain to reject the proposal, with only 45.77% in favor when just minutes remained. However, an 8.49 million OP token vote from Test in Prod shifted the outcome dramatically, pushing 'For' support to 61.84% and securing passage for the proposal.
Test in Prod, a core development team of Optimism's Collective, is fully funded by the Foundation and had recently secured a new seat on the Security Council. Their involvement raises questions about the independence of their vote and whether it represents an actual judgment or simply an obligation to support the Foundation's interests.
L2BEAT, an independent research institution in the Ethereum Layer 2 space, opposed the proposal, citing concerns over the lack of clear connection between token deployment and OP holders' interests. Polynya, a long-time participant in Optimism governance who resigned as a delegate in 2025, questioned the responsibility of handing over nearly 24% of circulating supply based on vague promises.
The original distribution commitment was for 19% of the total supply to be allocated to user airdrops. However, with this vote, that allocation has effectively been rewritten. The move also comes at a time when Optimism's price has plummeted from $4.85 in March 2024 to around $0.09 today.
