Optimism's $540M Token Reallocation Vote Sparks Corporate Growth Shift
The Optimism Foundation has proposed reallocating 546.9 million OP tokens from user airdrops to a 'Strategic Ecosystem Fund' via an ongoing governance vote. The proposal, which began on August 14 and ends on August 20, aims to reallocate tokens that were reserved for future airdrops. As of the latest data, approximately 9.105 million OP tokens support the proposal, while about 4.258 million OP tokens oppose it.
The Optimism Foundation initially set aside 816 million OP tokens (19% of its total supply) for user airdrops. However, only 269.1 million OP tokens have been distributed in five rounds between 2022 and 2024, accounting for about 33% of the reserved total. The foundation has stated that it will reassess after a 12-month period and does not commit to long-term continuation.
The vote's outcome may significantly impact token holders' expectations for future airdrops. If the proposal passes, the token distribution structure of Optimism will shift from 'user airdrop + ecosystem incentives' to corporate and institutional growth. This aligns with its OP Enterprise product line, Superchain expansion, and disciplined spending.
The community discussions have been intense, with critics arguing that the original share reserved for users is being repurposed as corporate growth funds led by the foundation. The long-term participant in Optimism governance, olimpio.eth, has even cast an opposing vote for the first time since participating in Optimism governance.
