Oracle Attacks Hit Record High: 32 DeFi Lending Protocols Targeted This Year
Decentralized finance (DeFi) lending protocols have been targeted by a record number of oracle price manipulation attacks this year, according to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs. The method involves artificially inflating the price of low-volume altcoins and using them as collateral to borrow major cryptocurrencies. This type of attack has become increasingly popular among hackers, with 32 incidents reported in 2023.
TRM Labs notes that price manipulation now accounts for about one-eighth of all hacking attacks in the crypto space, up from one-seventeenth in 2022. The rise in oracle manipulation poses a direct risk to users who provide liquidity or borrow against volatile assets. When a protocol suffers such an attack, it often results in insolvency, forcing users to lose funds or face delayed withdrawals.
The industry is responding by integrating more resilient oracle solutions and implementing circuit breakers or price deviation limits. However, TRM Labs warns that attackers are constantly adapting, and the industry must remain vigilant. The record number of incidents underscores the need for better security audits and real-time monitoring.
