Oracles Fuel $200B in DeFi, But Their Security Risks Can't Be Ignored

Blockchain oracles are a crucial component of decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, enabling smart contracts to access real-world data. However, they also introduce a fundamental security risk.

The oracle problem arises because blockchains rely on determinism, where every node executes the same code and arrives at the same result. If a smart contract could query an external API directly, different nodes would receive different responses at different times, breaking consensus.

Chainlink dominates the oracle market with approximately 75% of total value secured across DeFi protocols. Its decentralized oracle network aggregates data from multiple independent node operators to reduce single points of failure.

The oracle landscape is expanding beyond price feeds, with applications in cross-chain interoperability, verifiable randomness for gaming and NFTs, proof of reserves for stablecoins, and real-world asset tokenization.
