Orionx Shuts Down Amid $7M Crypto Custody Shortfall
Chilean cryptocurrency exchange Orionx has shut down after a forensic audit revealed over $7 million in custodial assets missing from its control. The company began permanently closing its operations, suspending withdrawals while it reconciles customer balances and implements a five-stage closure process.
The forensic reconciliation identified discrepancies across Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, and Polygon, where internal balances exceeded verifiable blockchain addresses. Approximately $3.93 million of the gap was attributed to Bitcoin, followed by around $2.29 million in Ether and $762,017 in XRP.
Orionx filed a criminal complaint on September 2 against co-founders Roberto Zibert and Joaquín Díaz, accusing them of involvement in asset movements between 2018 and 2021. Zibert and Díaz have denied the accusations, stating they did not act against customer interests.
