Pakistan Looks to Hong Kong's Tokenization Expertise for Financial Growth
Pakistan is looking to Hong Kong's expertise in tokenized bond markets as it seeks to improve its next-generation financial regime. The Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) Chairman, Bilal Bin Saqib, met with Hong Kong's Secretary for Financial Services, Christopher Hui, to benchmark the country's experience.
The discussion focused on digital bond issuance, regulatory innovation, and how tokenization could support efficient capital formation and operations of financial markets. The PVARA also met with Dr. Kelvin Wong, Chairman of Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), to discuss licensing, supervision, anti-money laundering (AML), tokenization, and stablecoins.
Tokenization is seen as a key area for Pakistan, with the country aiming to make its assets more accessible to global investors. This could potentially widen the pool of capital available to the country, according to Saqib. Hong Kong has already made significant strides in tokenized markets, issuing over $1 billion in tokenized green bonds in 2023 and 2024.
