Pantera's Morehead: Treasury Bond Buyback Plan 'Bluff' Sparks Bitcoin Rally
Pantera Capital's Dan Morehead argues that the US Treasury's expanded bond buyback plan was a 'bluff' that backfired, leading to Bitcoin's 26% rally in August.
The plan, introduced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 19, aimed to ease borrowing costs by allowing the government to repurchase its own debt. However, Morehead claims that this move was too small to have a significant impact, exposing instead the depth of the US debt problem.
'It backfired because everyone could see they are off by three orders of magnitude,' said Morehead.
Morehead believes that Bitcoin's price increase is directly tied to the bond buyback plan, which he sees as a macro trade benefiting from government expansion of debt. He points out that Pantera Capital had predicted Bitcoin would peak at $117,542 on August 10, 2025, and argues that this prediction has held.
Morehead expects another leg higher for Bitcoin once the current pullback ends, potentially leading to a new upswing by the end of the year followed by a two- to three-year run.
