Paraguay Bracing for Potential Energy Crisis as Bitcoin Mining Demand Surges
Paraguay's energy grid is facing a potential crisis due to the increasing demand of Bitcoin mining operations. According to experts, if current trends continue, Paraguay could experience a blackout by 2029. The country's energy researchers attribute this issue to the significant amount of renewable energy consumed by Bitcoin miners.
The Itaipu dam, one of the largest in the world, generates enough power for half a turbine, which is being entirely used by Bitcoin mining operations. This has led to concerns that Paraguay's energy independence may be put at risk.
Victorio Oxilia, an energy researcher, revealed that Bitcoin mining consumes 30% of all energy consumption in Paraguay. He also stated that hydrological conditions need to remain favorable for a crisis to develop by 2029.
The expiration of energy contracts with mining companies in 2027 adds uncertainty to the situation, as it is unclear whether these contracts will be extended. Analysts warn that Paraguay needs to invest heavily in new infrastructure to meet growing demand, with estimates suggesting a requirement of between $11 and $15 billion over the next 13 years.
Despite concerns about energy theft for Bitcoin mining, authorities have been cracking down on this issue by registering convictions for related crimes. However, some analysts argue that demand from residential areas is also contributing to the strain on the grid.
