Paraguay on Brink of Energy Crisis as Bitcoin Mining Soars

Bitcoin mining has become a significant energy consumer in Paraguay, using up to 30% of the country's power supply. Analysts warn that if mining demand continues to grow, Paraguay could face an energy crisis by 2029.

According to experts, Bitcoin mining uses as much power as one-and-a-half Itaipu dam turbines. This has raised concerns about the country's ability to meet its energy needs in the future.

The country may need to invest $11 billion-$15 billion in energy infrastructure over the next 13 years to accommodate growing demand. However, mining contracts are set to expire in 2027, and their extensions remain uncertain.
