PayPal Puts Crypto at Center of New Business Strategy
PayPal's new CEO Enrique Lores has restructured the company into three business units, one of which is dedicated to Payment Services & Crypto. This move signals a significant shift in PayPal's focus on cryptocurrency and sets revenue targets for each division.
The Payment Services & Crypto unit combines PayPal's crypto operations with Braintree and small and medium-sized business merchant services. Lores has set specific revenue targets for each of the three divisions, giving shareholders clearer visibility into the company's performance.
PayPal's Q2 2026 results showed a 5% year-over-year growth in revenue to $8.68 billion, beating analyst estimates. The company also raised its full-year profit outlook and aims to cut $400 million in expenses for 2026, with a longer-term goal of reducing $1.5 billion from its expense base.
The restructuring has significant implications for PayPal's stablecoin PYUSD, which is now part of the Payment Services & Crypto unit. The team behind this unit will have organizational incentives to push PYUSD adoption through Braintree's merchant network and SMB services.
