PayPal Stock Slumps Amid Failed Acquisition Bid and Stablecoin Decline
PayPal's stock has taken a hit in recent months due to the failed acquisition bid by Stripe and Advent International. The company's stablecoin, PYUSD, has also lost momentum with its supply and transaction volume falling.
The removal of a potential catalyst for the shares during the summer contributed to the decline in PayPal's stock price. Despite recovering part of the selloff that followed the failed deal, PYPL closed at $56.82 on September 3, still substantially below its 2021 all-time peak and 2025 highs.
The company faces challenges not only in its stablecoin business but also in account growth and digital payments competition. However, data shows that PYUSD is no longer growing, with a market capitalization of $2.89 billion, down from the year-to-date high of over $4.2 billion.
