PayPal Touts Stablecoin Expansion Amid Q2 Earnings Miss
PayPal's second-quarter earnings report highlighted stablecoins and AI-driven payment tools as key areas of focus for the global payments giant. The company reported Q2 earnings of $1.26 per share, below analysts' estimates of $1.28, but revenue reached $8.68 billion, up from $8.29 billion in the same period last year.
The $81 million non-GAAP adjustment related to gains and losses from strategic investments and crypto assets held for investment is notable, as PayPal excludes these gains and losses from its non-GAAP results due to not actively trading or relying on them for operations.
In its Q2 investor presentation, PayPal emphasized the expansion of agentic payments, stablecoins, identity, and biometric technologies by leveraging its payments network, risk infrastructure, and trust capabilities. The company also highlighted its PayPal World platform, which facilitated about $200 million in total payment volume between Venmo and PayPal.
The inclusion of crypto assets in earnings reconciliation underscores the growing importance of digital currencies for the financial services industry.
