Pendle's Yield Tokenization Protocol: Separating Yield from Assets
Yield tokenization is a mechanism that separates yield from an asset and turns both halves into tradeable tokens. This concept has gained traction in DeFi, particularly with Pendle's leading protocol.
Pendle allows users to buy fixed yield, speculate on variable yield, or provide liquidity using a single yield-bearing position. The protocol introduces time-based expiry risk that most standard DeFi products do not carry, making it more powerful but also more nuanced than basic staking.
The mechanism works by splitting a yield-bearing asset into two tokens: the Principal Token (PT) and the Yield Token (YT). The PT entitles the holder to redeem the underlying principal at a future maturity date, while the YT allows the holder to collect all the yield generated between now and that same maturity date.
Pendle's AMM accounts for the fact that a YT's value decays toward zero as the maturity date approaches. This time-weighted pricing prevents distortions in yield tokens' prices. Liquidity providers on Pendle deposit into pools containing PT and the underlying asset, earning swap fees and PENDLE token incentives.
Pendle offers three distinct use cases: fixed yield, yield speculation (long YT), and liquidity provision. Each strategy has a different risk profile and is available to any wallet holder without KYC or minimum deposit requirements.
