Pendle's Yield Tokenization Surges as Expiry Deadlines Approach
DeFi users have long been familiar with staking, lending, and liquidity pools. However, few are aware of yield tokenization, a mechanism that separates the principal from its associated yield. Pendle has developed the leading protocol around this concept, allowing users to buy fixed yields or speculate on variable yields without touching the underlying asset.
The process works by splitting a yield-bearing asset into two tokens: a Principal Token (PT) and a Yield Token (YT). The PT represents the original deposit, while the YT represents the future yield stream. This separation allows the market to price future income streams independently from the assets that produce them.
Pendle's automated market maker accounts for the fact that YT values decay over time as maturity approaches. Users can buy fixed yields, speculate on variable yields, or provide liquidity through a single yield-bearing position. The protocol offers three distinct use cases: fixed yield, yield speculation (long YT), and liquidity provision.
The introduction of maturity dates fundamentally changes the risk profile compared to standard DeFi positions. If users sell before maturity, they will receive a price that reflects the remaining time to expiry. YT decay is a sharper risk, as its value shrinks every day that passes.
