Pepe's Unconventional Rise: How a Meme Token Defies Logic
Pepe (PEPE) is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token that has defied conventional logic by maintaining a market capitalization of $1.43 billion despite lacking a clear use case or product roadmap.
Launched in April 2023, PEPE was designed as a cultural asset centered around the Pepe the Frog character created by artist Matt Furie in 2005.
The token's value is not derived from any underlying application, but rather from its liquidity depth, exchange access, and community attention.
A fixed supply of 420.69 trillion PEPE tokens was minted at launch, with 93.1% allocated to a liquidity pool that has been burned, making it difficult for the founding team to pull liquidity.
The remaining 6.9% was held in a multi-signature wallet, which burned 6.9 trillion tokens in October 2023, reducing circulating supply and increasing PEPE's scarcity.
Without a transaction tax, trading PEPE is relatively inexpensive compared to other memecoins that often route a cut of every trade to holders or a treasury.
Institutional interest has taken notice of PEPE, with asset manager Canary Capital filing a Form S-1 with the SEC for a spot PEPE ETF in April 2026, which could potentially bring more liquidity and attention to the token.
