Perp DEX Open Interest Surges to New High Amid Falling Volumes
The decentralized exchange (DEX) sector for perpetual futures has reached its highest open interest level of 2026, with approximately $20.9 billion in mid-to-late August.
This represents a significant increase from the start of the month, when open interest was around $14.8 billion, indicating billions in new leveraged positions were opened in a matter of weeks.
Interestingly, trading volumes on these platforms have actually fallen by roughly 34% over the past six months, suggesting that more money is being parked in open positions while fewer trades are being executed.
Hyperventilating about Hyperliquid
If the perp DEX sector were a race, Hyperliquid would be lapping the field. The platform accounts for between $12.25 billion and $13.22 billion of the total open interest, commanding north of half the entire market.
Aster is its closest competitor, holding about $2 billion, which is a significant disparity.
