Perpetual Futures Dominate Crypto Markets, But Risks Run Deep

Perpetual futures have become the most traded instrument in cryptocurrency markets, outperforming spot markets for Bitcoin and major altcoins combined. Despite their popularity, many newcomers to crypto trading encounter perpetuals by accident, without fully understanding how they work.

The key to perpetual futures is the funding rate, which ensures that the contract price remains closely tied to the underlying asset's spot price. When long positions dominate, they pay short positions a premium to hold the position, and vice versa. This process is repeated every eight hours on most centralized exchanges, with the direction and size of the payment depending on the difference between the perpetual contract price and the spot index price.

Leverage amplifies both gains and losses in perpetual futures, allowing traders to control positions much larger than their deposited collateral. However, this also means that a losing trade can quickly deplete a trader's balance, leading to liquidation. Exchanges track two margin thresholds for every position: the initial margin required to open the position, and the maintenance margin below which the position is automatically liquidated.

Decentralized exchanges handle funding differently, with some using continuous funding calculations or borrowing fee models instead of fixed eight-hour windows. Despite these differences, perpetual futures remain a dominant force in crypto markets, with Hyperliquid reporting over $41 billion in daily notional volume in early 2026.
