Perpetual Futures Expand Beyond Crypto to Traditional Finance
Perpetual futures contracts are rapidly spreading across traditional finance, including stocks, commodities, and stakes in private companies. This shift, referred to as 'perpification,' marks a significant milestone for perpetual futures, which initially gained prominence in crypto markets.
The expansion of perpetual futures is pronounced in various asset classes. For instance, SpaceX's initial public offering on June 12 saw trading volume in SpaceX perpetual futures on Hyperliquid reach a record high, despite being less than 2% of Nasdaq turnover.
Perpetual futures tied to gold, silver, and crude oil also ranked among the fastest-growing product groups in derivatives markets earlier this year. On February 28, when traditional financial markets were closed due to a US-Israel strike on Iran, crude oil perpetual futures enabled price discovery, highlighting the utility of round-the-clock trading.
Established financial firms and exchanges are accelerating product launches, with Kalshi introducing the first crypto perpetual futures product regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Coinbase has rolled out stock-index futures using a perpetual structure, while CME Group announced plans for 24-hour trading and smaller West Texas Intermediate crude contracts.
