Phantom Ditches Sui Support, Raising Questions About Wallet Power
Phantom, a popular cryptocurrency wallet provider, will be removing Sui from its interface on September 24. This decision comes after Phantom and Sui announced in August that they would be ending their integration. The removal of Sui from the Phantom interface will not affect users' ownership or access to their Sui assets, but rather remove the convenience of displaying balances, supporting transactions, and connecting to decentralized applications within the wallet.
The separation between Phantom's decision and the user's ability to control their funds highlights the power that wallet providers hold in a self-custodial market. While wallet providers cannot erase users' coins, they can withdraw the tools and interfaces through which people interact with a blockchain.
Phantom's guide provides three migration paths for users to consider: swapping out of native SUI into a supported asset on Solana, exiting SUI into another supported asset, or importing their account into Slush. However, each path carries its own risks and requirements, including the need to handle high-value recovery phrases securely.
The decision has sparked discussions about the balance between convenience and security in self-custodial wallets, with some arguing that removing key export as a bad practice for security reasons.
