Phishing Email Swipes 400,000 XRP From Crypto Holder's Wallet
A cryptocurrency holder lost 400,000 XRP tokens after falling for a phishing email that appeared to be from Ledger, prompting an update on his hardware wallet.
The incident occurred on Easter night at 10pm, when the victim received the email and was tricked into entering his wallet information. Kaltekis noted that phishing attempts have become increasingly convincing in recent years, even for those working in cybersecurity.
The victim still had about 50,000 XRP held safely in a separate insured custody account that required additional verification steps before any transaction could be approved.
Kaltekis emphasized that self-custody isn't inherently foolproof against sophisticated phishing attempts and serves as a reminder for holders to verify unexpected update requests carefully and consider additional safeguards for larger holdings.
