Pi Network Mainnet Upgrade to Protocol 27 Looms
The Pi Network is preparing to upgrade its mainnet to protocol 27 on September 15, according to reports. However, this upgrade has already been implemented on the first testnet since August 21.
Node operators will need to update their software to match the new version level, as nodes without the current version may lose connection to the mainnet. Developers building applications on Pi will also have to check if their code still works with the changed authentication rules.
The Pi blockchain has undergone seven protocol jumps in just five months, with each jump bringing new features and improvements. The most recent upgrade, to protocol 26, took place two days after the node deadline of August 11. This shows that the chain can switch over once a sufficient majority of nodes are running the new software.
Our measurement of the Pi mainnet's ledger history reveals that each jump has been implemented in ongoing operation, with the previous version number carried by the ledger before it and the new one appearing just seconds later. This is reassuring for holders, as it suggests that the network will not stand still during the upgrade.
