Piesiewicz Detained in Widening Zondacrypto Probe
Poland's Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz was detained on August 27 as part of an ongoing investigation into the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. The detention is a significant development in the probe, which has been expanded to include new evidence.
The investigators are examining whether Piesiewicz received a material benefit from Zondacrypto's chief Przemysław Kral. There is evidence that Kral bought a €40,000 Patek Philippe watch later given to Piesiewicz, with their messages discussing Piesiewicz's potential assistance with the exchange's problems at Poland's competition authority.
Kral has reportedly reached a cooperation arrangement with prosecutors and is seeking a reduced sentence in return for evidence. He is now represented by lawyer Roman Giertych, who is also an MP for the ruling Civic Coalition party.
