Pirate Nation Studio has shut down operations, releasing all its code and art into the public domain under a CC0 license. The studio had raised $33 million from Andreessen Horowitz in September 2023 to build an on-chain RPG called Pirate Nation.

The game saw a significant decline in users, dropping from over 100,000 daily active users to around 10,000. This led to unsustainable operating costs of $150,000 per month, which the studio couldn't afford. The game went dark in September 2025, and despite efforts to revive it, the studio finally closed down.

The CC0 license means that anyone can use Pirate Nation's code, art, and smart contracts without permission or restriction. This is a significant move, as it allows developers to build on top of the existing work and create new projects.
