Pirate Nation Studio Shut Down: $33M Valued Project Abandons On-Chain RPG
Pirate Nation studio has announced its shutdown after struggling to sustain engagement and costs. The studio behind the on-chain RPG, which raised $33 million from Andreessen Horowitz in September 2023, released all code, art, and intellectual property under a CC0 license.
The game's daily active user count dropped from over 100,000 to approximately 10,000, making its monthly operating costs of $150,000 unsustainable. The studio limped along for nearly another year before finally shutting down operations in August 2025.
Founder Amitt and co-founder Adam Fern acknowledged that the project never achieved mass-market penetration despite significant development and capital investment.
