Pixelmon Game Development Halted After Failed Playtest
The Pixelmon game development team has announced that it will discontinue all game development and cut its game team. This decision follows three weeks of playtesting with an external publisher, which did not result in a long-term commercial offer.
The original Pixelmon launched in 2021 as an open-world RPG with NFTs as playable characters, virtual land, and play-to-earn mechanics. The Genesis sale in February 2022 raised $70 million, but the subsequent art reveal bore little resemblance to what buyers expected, becoming one of the defining controversies of the NFT boom.
The team that shut down this week was led by Giulio Xiloyannis and had rebuilt around the Pixelmon brand. They launched several titles, including Kevin the Adventurer on Base and PixelPals, but struggled to retain players and justify further investment.
