Plattsburgh Considers 12-Month Ban on High-Energy Computing Facilities
The city of Plattsburgh in New York is considering a 12-month moratorium on new and expanded cryptocurrency mining, artificial intelligence, and other high-energy computing facilities.
Mayor Wendell Hughes introduced Local Law P-2, which would temporarily prevent the city from issuing land-use approvals for covered facilities.
The proposed law targets commercial facilities primarily devoted to cryptocurrency mining, blockchain validation, AI computing, machine learning, cloud computing, digital asset processing, server farms, and colocation services that use at least 300 kilowatts of electricity.
Existing lawful facilities could continue operating during the moratorium but would not be allowed to expand or intensify their operations without municipal approval.
