Plattsburgh Considers Temporary Crypto Venture Ban Over Energy Fears

Plattsburgh, New York is considering a temporary ban on crypto ventures due to concerns about energy usage. The city's low electric rates have made it an attractive location for cryptocurrency miners and data centers.

The proposed ban would give the city time to codify new zoning changes that would ensure its energy allotment from the state isn't overused by these high-energy facilities, according to Mayor Wendell Hughes.

Hughes stated that the city's total energy allotment is 105 megawatts, and currently, crypto or data centers use around half of this amount.

The mayor emphasized that the proposed measure would head to the county for approval before returning to the Common Council for a vote.
