POAP Winds Down Operations After Over Five Years
POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol), a platform for issuing digital collectibles to commemorate events and community activities, has announced plans to wind down its operations after more than five years.
In a tweet on August 3, Isabel Gonzalez, the co-founder and general manager of POAP, stated that the company will be ceasing its services. However, no specific date was given for the final shutdown or the discontinuation of existing features.
POAP allowed event organizers to create digital collectibles that participants could receive as proof of attendance or as a keepsake. The platform claimed to have issued millions of collectibles across hundreds of communities, partnering with notable organizations such as Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group, and Bayer, among others.
Gonzalez acknowledged the challenges in building sustainable businesses within the crypto industry's unique funding cycles and service adoption dynamics. She pointed out that customer communities are often grossly undervalued by companies, highlighting POAP users' real connections made through events, workshops, and hackathons.
