Pocket Bitcoin Breach Exposes 291 Users to Identity Theft
A data breach at Pocket Bitcoin has exposed sensitive information about 291 users, including their real-world identities and wallet activity.
The leak occurred when customer support correspondence was accessed by an unauthorized party. This correspondence included a mix of names, postal addresses, Bitcoin addresses used for transactions, identity-document copies, and source-of-funds records.
Most people in the cohort had only some of these fields exposed, Pocket Bitcoin said. The company emphasized that this does not pose a risk to customer funds, as private keys were never held by the service and required a valid signature for spending.
The more immediate concern is deception, as details from copied support correspondence could make emails, calls, or messages about the incident appear more credible. Pocket Bitcoin warned customers of this potential threat, noting that Switzerland's National Cyber Security Centre has documented scams and threats using a recipient's real home address to increase pressure.
