Pokémon Account Hacked for Memecoin Scam on Anniversary
The official Pokémon X account on X was compromised for 30 minutes on August 27. The hackers used this time to promote a fake memecoin called $POKEMON, claiming it was an official cryptocurrency tied to the franchise's 30th anniversary celebrations.
The attackers timed their hack to coincide with the anniversary milestone, making the scam posts look superficially plausible. They promoted $POKEMON as an official token, complete with a contract address and a link designed to mimic the legitimate anniversary website.
The Pokémon Company quickly regained control of the account and removed the unauthorized posts. They also published a statement apologizing for the confusion while distancing themselves from any cryptocurrency ventures.
