Poland Crypto Bill Veto Stands as Lawmakers Fall Short of Override Vote

Poland's crypto bill veto remains in place after lawmakers failed to override it on September 4, 2026. The Sejm needed a three-fifths majority to cancel President Karol Nawrocki's rejection of the cryptocurrency regulation measure. However, they fell short by 25 votes, with 241 voting in favor and 198 against.

The legislation would have named the Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) as the official regulator for the sector. This is the third time President Nawrocki has vetoed the same piece of legislation, citing concerns that strict rules could push local firms to move their operations to other countries.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged lawmakers to back the override before the vote, pointing to an ongoing investigation into the collapsed exchange Zondacrypto as a reason for urgency. The case has led to a formal request for former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro's extradition from the United States on other charges.
