Poland's Cryptocurrency Scandal Enters Explosive New Phase Ahead of Election Year
Poland's cryptocurrency scandal has taken a potentially explosive turn ahead of the country's election year. The collapsed exchange Zondacrypto, which erupted in April, is now under investigation for allegedly misappropriating client funds and channeling large sums into conservative media and events.
Prosecutors estimate investor losses at around 2.4 billion zloty (550 million euros), making it one of Central Europe's biggest cryptocurrency scandals in recent years. The company's former chief, Przemyslaw Kral, is reportedly cooperating with prosecutors and may provide evidence about Zondacrypto's financial links to Poland's political right.
The affair has already raised questions for President Karol Nawrocki, who was a headline speaker at the CPAC conference in Poland days before the 2025 presidential runoff. Prosecutors are examining possible offences connected to, among others, Zondacrypto's financing of a foundation linked to former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro.
With parliamentary elections due in 2027, Kral's testimony could turn a financial scandal into a damaging stream of revelations for PiS and other right-wing parties. Reports are emerging about nervousness inside PiS over who could be next implicated.
