Poland's State Oil Company Loses $330 Million to Crypto-Laundered Scam
Poland's state-owned oil company Orlen lost $330 million to a Dubai-based scam, and prosecutors now suspect that the money was laundered into cryptocurrency.
The funds were sent in late 2023 and early 2024 for Venezuelan crude that never arrived. Three former Orlen managers have been indicted on charges of negligent supervision, with potential sentences of up to 25 years in prison.
Prosecutors believe the money was converted into crypto once it landed with the Dubai intermediaries, making it harder to track than a traditional bank transfer. This tactic is similar to those used in previous laundering cases, such as Tether-linked schemes and Binance's settlement.
PDVSA, Venezuela's state oil company, has been using cryptocurrency channels to sell crude while under sanctions. While this method allows PDVSA to dodge restrictions, it also creates vulnerabilities for buyers like Orlen who can lose millions without a clear paper trail.
