A 90-year-old North Carolina woman was nearly scammed out of $10,000 by a cryptocurrency scammer who convinced her to withdraw funds from her account and transfer them to a Bitcoin kiosk.

Mary Ann Nunley said the scam began with a text message that claimed her Geek Squad account had been compromised. The message stated that $390 would be withdrawn from her account if she did not take action.

Nunley called the number provided in the message, and after hours of back-and-forth conversation with the scammer, was told she needed to transfer nearly $10,000 to a nearby Bitcoin kiosk to resolve the issue. However, when Nunley arrived at the gas station where the machine was located, it was broken.

That's when Wilmington Police Officer Nicholas Morrison intervened, recognizing warning signs of a crypto scam and advising Nunley not to proceed with transferring her funds. He helped her end the call with the scammer and confirmed that the Geek Squad was not involved in taking her money.
