Police Officer Foils Cryptocurrency Scam on Elderly Woman
A 90-year-old woman from North Carolina nearly lost $10,000 to a cryptocurrency scam before a police officer intervened. Mary Ann Nunley received a text message on July 27 claiming her account with the Geek Squad had ended and that she needed to pay $390 to resolve the issue.
Nunley called the number provided in the message, which led to hours of back-and-forth with a scammer who promised to return her money. The scammer eventually convinced Nunley to drive to a nearby Bitcoin kiosk at a gas station with nearly $10,000 in cash to fix the situation.
However, the Bitcoin machine was broken when Nunley arrived, and that's when Wilmington Police Officer Nicholas Morrison stepped in. Recognizing warning signs of a crypto scam, he approached Nunley and told her not to put her money into the machine. He then helped her end the call with the scammer and confirmed she had not lost any money.
