Polish Olympic Committee Chief Detained in Crypto Bribery Scandal
The president of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, has been arrested by prosecutors on allegations that he accepted bribes from the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. The arrest is part of a broader investigation into the exchange's operations, which also involves suspected fraud and money laundering with estimated damages of at least 350 million zloty (~$95 million).
Prosecutors are investigating whether Piesiewicz received valuables from Zondacrypto CEO Przemysław Kral, including a Patek Philippe watch worth approximately €40,000 ($46,000), in exchange for helping resolve regulatory issues facing the exchange. Piesiewicz has denied these allegations, stating that he purchased the watch himself with cash.
The arrest of a high-ranking sports official in connection with a cryptocurrency firm highlights the growing intersection between digital assets and traditional institutions, as well as the regulatory challenges that accompany this new asset class.
