Polish Parliament Fails to Override Crypto Bill Veto Amid Zondacrypto Scandal
The Polish Parliament has failed to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto on the Crypto-Asset Market Act, dealing a blow to local cryptocurrency operators. The bill aims to comply with the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework, but Polish companies will now have to register their activities abroad due to the lack of support from the Sejm.
The vote, pushed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, fell short of the 266 votes needed to overturn the veto. This marks the third time the Sejm has failed to override Nawrocki's veto on the crypto law.
The presidential veto was motivated by concerns that the act would undermine Poles' freedom and stability. President Nawrocki had previously warned about the effects of the bill, stating he could 'no longer imagine that President Nawrocki, Chairman Kaczyński, and former Prime Minister Morawiecki would reject this problem with such incredible lightness.'
The failed initiative follows a corruption probe involving government officials connected to Zondacrypto, a national exchange that stole up to $94 million in customer funds. The scandal has led to the detention of Polish Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz.
