Polkadot Surges to Top Decentralized Blockchain Ranking
Polkadot has taken the top spot among major blockchains in terms of decentralization, according to Chainspect's Nakamoto coefficient table. The metric measures the minimum number of independent entities required to compromise a blockchain's core operation, with a higher score indicating more decentralized control.
The August 30 snapshot from Chainspect showed Polkadot with a Nakamoto coefficient of 172 and 600 validators, significantly ahead of other major networks. This structure supports a more decentralized setup through shared security, parachains, validators, nominators, and on-chain governance.
While the strong coefficient is seen as a key differentiator for Polkadot in a competitive market, it's essential to note that decentralization cannot be reduced to a single score. Other factors such as stake concentration, client diversity, infrastructure dependencies, governance, token distribution, and real-world control also play a crucial role.
Polkadot's architecture has been designed with decentralization at its core, using shared security and distributed participation through validators and nominators. The parachain model extends this concept to connected chains, making decentralization central to Polkadot's identity.
