Polkadot is considering the launch of its native stablecoin, dotUSD, after the blockchain's governance community voted to allocate $5 million from the Polkadot treasury to fund the initiative. The proposal, known as Referendum 1944, was submitted by the Polkadot Community Foundation (PCF) and aims to provide users with a dollar-denominated stable asset.

The proposed funding structure would see $2.5 million allocated for minting the first batch of dotUSD tokens and another $2.5 million devoted to supplying trading liquidity through dedicated pools on the Polkadot Asset Hub. This would enable immediate swaps between DOT and dotUSD, streamlining access to stable value within the ecosystem.

While backing with DOT is considered a potential future phase, the plan currently focuses on stability and broad adoption. The governance system would retain power to adjust mechanisms over time, ensuring that all key decisions remain in the hands of DOT token holders.
