Polygon Cuts Block Time to 1.75 Seconds, Boosts Capacity
Polygon has reduced its average block time by 250 milliseconds to 1.75 seconds, marking the first such decrease since the network's genesis.
This change increases theoretical throughput by around 14%, bringing the network's capacity up to approximately 3,260 transactions per second, according to Lucca Martins, a Polygon software engineer.
The reduction in block time is significant because it allows for faster clearing of transaction backlogs and reduces fee spikes during congestion, which can make high-frequency activities such as stablecoin transfers and decentralized finance trades less usable.
Polygon's goal is to increase its capacity further, aiming for 5,000 to 10,000 transactions per second. As part of this effort, the network has been working on expanding its traditional payment rails, including a recent addition to Visa's stablecoin settlement program alongside other networks such as Base and Arc.
