Polygon Cuts Block Time to 1.75 Seconds, Sets Sights on 5,000 TPS
Polygon has made significant strides in reducing its block time to 1.75 seconds, marking a 250 millisecond decrease from its previous average. This move is part of a two-step proposal (PIP-86) aimed at further improving the network's performance. The block time reduction lifts theoretical throughput by approximately 14%, taking the network to about 3,260 transactions per second.
This change is particularly crucial for high-frequency activities such as stablecoin transfers, retail payments, and decentralized finance trades, where fee spikes during congestion can erode usability. By clearing transaction backlogs faster, Polygon aims to cater to institutional payment flows and stay ahead of stablecoin demand.
According to Adam Dossa, senior vice president of engineering at Polygon Labs, the ultimate goal is to reach 5,000 to 10,000 transactions per second. The network has been working on widening its capacity to meet increasing demands and avoid congestion.
