Polygon Labs Urges Users to Upgrade After Austin and Kyoto Hardforks
Polygon Labs has issued an urgent client upgrade notice to its users following two recent hardforks, Austin and Kyoto. The company warns that any Polygon PoS node still running on pre-hardfork binaries will fall out of canonical consensus.
The Austin hardfork addressed a resource-exhaustion risk by capping the gas consumed while Bor processes state-sync events from L1-to-L2 bridge deposits. This could have led to delayed block processing or even chain stalls. The Kyoto hardfork, on the other hand, targeted a deeply nested google.protobuf.Any messages vulnerability that could have forced validators to spend heavily on decoding.
Polygon Labs has provided guidance for operators to upgrade and catch up with the network's accepted history. Nodes that had not diverged from the mainnet require no resync, but those already past the relevant height should install the applicable release and roll back if needed.
