Polygon's Gigagas Roadmap Hits 5,000 TPS Milestone, Still Far from Target
Polygon's Gigagas roadmap aims to scale its proof-of-stake (PoS) chain to 100,000 transactions per second by 2026. As of mid-2026, the network has reached a peak capacity of around 5,000 TPS, roughly 5 percent of that target.
The project is not finished and is moving through stages, each shipped live on mainnet before the next one starts. The three-stage plan includes reaching 1,000 TPS with roughly 5-second finality, scaling past 5,000 TPS with fast block times and no chain reorganizations, and pushing beyond 100,000 TPS while keeping fees under a cent.
Polygon has raised its block gas limit in a long series of steps, each one live on mainnet. The upgrades include Bhilai (July 2025), which passed 1,000 TPS and added EIP-7702 account abstraction; Rio (October 2025), which introduced the Validator-Elected Block Producer (VEBloP) model; and Ithaca (July 29-30, 2026), which added automatic failover to prevent the chain from stalling.
Polygon has also partnered with Visa in a specific way. On April 29, 2026, Visa added Polygon to its global stablecoin settlement program, allowing Visa's card issuers and acquirers to settle transactions in stablecoins on Polygon rather than waiting on traditional banking rails.
