Polygon's Ithaca Upgrade Aims to Streamline Payment Reliability Under Stress

Polygon's Ithaca upgrade aims to improve payment reliability on its Chain network by addressing issues that cause stalls and delays. The upgrade, which went live on July 30 at block 50,185,000, focuses on keeping payments moving smoothly even when infrastructure problems arise.

The protocol has faced issues with stalled blocks and oversized transactions slowing down the network during peak usage periods. Ithaca addresses these problems by implementing automatic failover mechanisms that rotate in a healthy producer if one stalls, ensuring transactions continue uninterrupted.

Another key feature of the upgrade is oversized transaction safeguards, which flag or intercept unusually large transactions before they can strain the network or slow down block production. Node operators also gain clearer real-time insight into infrastructure issues through operator visibility improvements.

The Ithaca upgrade is part of a series of four mainnet upgrades shipped in under five months by Polygon Labs. Each upgrade has targeted different aspects of payments, including confirmation speed and fee predictability. The team's focus on reliability under stress reflects the growing importance of this factor in payment-focused chains.
